Courtesy California Walnut Board The California Walnut Board is sponsoring a health-and-nutrition curriculum in four California schools.
On Jan. 29, officials from the Folsom, Calif.-based board joined members of the Fresno Unified School District and the Fresno County Farm Bureau at Fresno’s Sunnyside High School for the launch there of HealthCorps, a curriculum founded and led by TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife, Lisa Oz, according to a board news release.
The board supports HealthCorps, which has been implemented in 68 schools in 14 states and the District of Columbia, in two Fresno and two Sacramento high schools.
As part of the program, student teams compete in a healthy cook-off challenge led by culinary experts and their HealthCorps coordinators — recent college graduates who defer entry into medical school or graduate health programs to participate in public service through a two-year, full-time assignment at a designated public high school.
“Engaging students in healthy cooking and eating habits is an important first step toward creating healthy habits for a lifetime,” Shawn Hayes, chief academic officer and director of research and education for HealthCorps, said in the release. “When you make nutrition education fun, students are more likely to share it with their friends and families.”
