Washington apple and pear growers are donating $27 million to Washington State University for tree fruit research and extension services.
The gift, the largest in the university’s history, will be spread out over the next eight years, according to a Washington State news release.
The state’s apple, pear, cherry and stone fruit producers voted on whether to approve a $1-per-ton assessment to pay for donations.
For the donations to be approved, half of producers in the four categories had to approve them.
Fifty-seven percent of apple growers and 56% of pear growers approved the assessment.
Forty-four percent of cherry growers and 43% of stone fruit producers approved the assessment.
