United Fresh surveys wholesalers, distributors

The United Fresh Produce Association has begun a benchmarking survey of wholesaler and distributor operations.

The confidential survey asks information on labor practices, sale practice metrics, procurement and inventory management, warehouse metrics and outbound transportation. The deadline is Aug. 12.

A final report based on the survey will include information on company sizes, types and locations. It will be available to United Fresh members for $195, $295 for nonmembers and $95 for companies participating in the survey, according to a news release.

Survey participants will also receive a customized report showing how their responses compare to the overall results.

“The Wholesaler-Distributor Board put a great deal of effort into developing this survey,” Ron Carkoski, United Fresh chairman-elect and past chairman of the board, said in the release. “We considered what data helps us to be successful in our businesses, and had several detailed discussions on the metrics we measure and how to use them to create a valuable tool.”

The survey was designed to be simple to complete, said Carkoski, president and chief executive officer of the Four Seasons Family of Companies.

“The more companies that participate, the more robust a data set we will have to inform produce wholesale and distribution companies about current business trends,” Lisa Strube, Wholesale-Distributor Board chairman and director of finance and administration at Strube Celery & Vegetable Co., said in the release.
