Organic herb company looks ahead to holidays

Dan GalbraithShenandoah Growers vice president of key account sales Michele Henning holds the company’s new Flavor Herb Trio gift pack while standing next to a retail display of newly launched living herb products at the Natural Products Expo East/All Things Organic show. The show was Sept. 22-24 in Baltimore. BALTIMORE — Hoping it becomes the “in” gift this holiday season, Shenandoah Growers started pre-selling its Flavor Herb Trio at the All Things Organic Show.

Michele Henning, vice president of key account sales for the Harrisburg, Va., company, said Shenandoah made its first appearance as an exhibitor at the show, the annual convention for the Organic Trade Association. The show, part of Natural Products Expo East, was Sept. 21-24.

The gift bags have a suggested retail price point of $9.99. They consist of living rosemary, sage and thyme plants, providing an ideal mix for the holiday season, Henning said.

Shenandoah Growers also recently introduced an expansion of a line it started in 2008, featuring fresh living herbs grown in Virginia, that can be displayed at retail in a six-case or three-case rack.

“It’s like having a fresh garden right in your kitchen,” Henning said.

Because many of the herbs are conducive to use in holiday meat/poultry recipes, retailers often cross-promote them with turkey and the like.

The new living herbs include basil, sage, mint, rosemary, oregano and thyme.

“The best thing about this is that when our living herbs are added to our fresh-cut program, cannibalization has not occurred. In fact, our retailers have reported 20% sales growth for the whole category,” Henning said.
