Sunkist returns to snack nut category

The Sunkist label is returning to the snack nut category with nine new products and three packaging formats starting in March.

Five of those — trail mix blends — are expected to start shipping by April.

Trifecta Foods LLC, Pacoima, Calif., will launch two lines, Sunkist Signature Nuts and Sunkist Fruit and Nut Blends in conjunction with Sunkist Growers Inc.

The Sunkist label began to disappear from nuts in late 2009 as its pistachios were rebranded under the Wonderful label. Roll International Corp. once had the license behind those pistachios.

“We’re expanding the nut category at Sunkist, and focusing on pistachios, almonds and cashews,” said Scott Jacobson, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Trifecta Foods, a Sunkist licensee. “But where we really make Sunkist stronger than it was before is through our Blends line. It’s a proprietary flavoring process, and the tastes are unlike any in the trail mix category.”

The flavors in that line are strawberry yogurt, berry, chocolate, tropical and breakfast.

Packaging formats are a standard bag; a stand-up gusset bag; and a peel-and-pour ecotub, similar to cherry tomato tubs. The first production run on the standard bags of nuts is March 12. April 2 is the expected first ship date on stand-up bags of nuts and blends. The ecotub will roll out May 2, Jacobson said.

All three pack styles will be offered for every product.

I'm sitting in an Arkansas airport after a long of meetings and decide to purchase a healthy snack. I grab a sunkist blends chocolate mango banana to discover that the entire bag consists of dry fruit. One chocolate hazelnut. Not fair sunkist, NOT OK
