Courtesy Gills Onions(UPDATED COVERAGE, May 21) Oxnard, Calif.-based Gills Onions, LLC is voluntarily recalling 2,360 pounds of diced red onions in Canada and the U.S. after a random sample taken by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency tested positive for listeria.

The sample was taken from a retail store in Ontario, Canada.

“Because the recalled product may have been further distributed after we delivered it to our customers, broadening the recall to include all of Canada is the best way to ensure an effective recall,” said Amy Philpott, a spokeswoman for the company.

In the U.S., Gills Onions shipped the product to retailers and foodservice distributors in 14 states: California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Idaho, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Arkansas, Ohio, Tennessee, New Jersey, Georgia and Florida.

No illnesses have been reported. Affected product recently passed its use-by dates.

Recalled product sold at retail was packaged in a 7-ounce clear plastic clamshell, labeled Gills Onions. It has a May 17 use-by date and the lot code 51RDA1A2119 stamped on the UPC label. The UPC number in Canada is 643550000450; in the U.S., it’s 643550000412. But since the UPC number also appears on other products, the company is advising customers to identify it by the lot code.

Foodservice product was packaged in 5-pound clear plastic bags, identified as Gills Onions Diced Red Onions. It had expiration dates of May 14 or May 15. Lot code 51RDA1A2119 is stamped on the bag and box.

Gills Onions notified all customers who received the recalled lot directly from the company and requested that they remove from commerce any of it that may still be in stock, according to the release. The company also asked its customers to notify their customers.
