South Georgia and north Florida grower-shippers are checking for damage from Tropical Storm Beryl.

The storm rolled through the growing regions May 27-28 and made landfall at Jacksonville, Fla.

It dumped heavy rains, but 70 mph winds quickly declined to 30 mph as forecasters downgraded Beryl to a tropical depression as it moved through north Florida and south Georgia vegetable and potato areas.

Steve Johnson, salesman for Lake Park, Ga.-based Blackwater Produce LLC, the sales agent for Coggins Farm and Produce Inc., said Beryl’s eye remained centered near Valdosta, Ga., most of May 28 and early May 29 but only produced about two inches of rain.

He said it’s too early to estimate any damage to one of south Georgia’s principal vegetable growing regions.

“It wasn’t but a huge rainmaker,” Johnson said May 29. “People to the east and south of us had pretty big amounts and there are a lot of vegetables further east. Between the holiday weekend and people taking off, there’s been a lull in the action. The storm has everyone stopped for a couple of days.”
