In response to consumer inquiries, Houweling’s Tomatoes sought and received verification from the Non-GMO Project that its tomatoes aren’t genetically modified.
Casey Houweling, chief executive officer for the Delta, British Columbia-based company, said in a news release the verification is increasingly important to consumers. He said Houweling’s has always been committed to using non-GMO seeds but consumers didn’t 
necessarily know that.
Houweling’s brand only appears on tomatoes the company has grown, according to its website, unlike many brands that are produced by contract growers. The company sought third-party verification of their non-GMO status to provide customers with an additional level of confidence, the release said.
The Non-GMO Project, Bellingham, Wash., began in 2007 as a 501-C3 non-profit organization. It started third-party verification of non-GMO foods in 2008. The idea was conceived in 2005 when the Natural Grocery Co., Berkeley, Calif., and Big Carrot Natural Food Market, Toronto, joined forces to provide customers information about the GMO status of foods.
