Growing Power, Milwaukee, has received a five-year, $5 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to develop and grow operations across the country.

The operations will produce locally grown food, train new farmers and provide healthy produce for children and families in low-income neighborhoods, according to a news release.

Growing Power, a nonprofit in urban agriculture, will help local community food centers.

“Growing Power will help these local community food centers build organizational strength through strategic planning, leadership development, infrastructural development, financial sustainability guidance, anti-racism education and promoting networking opportunities,” Will Allen, Growing Power chief executive officer said in the release.

The community food centers are located in Detroit, New Orleans, Taos, N.M. and in the Mississippi delta region of Arkansas and Mississippi.

Growing Power’s own community food center and production farms in Milwaukee are producing more than a million pounds of food annually, according to the release.

The food centers in other communities will be tailored by local residents to fit the needs of each community.

This is a very interesting subject. I am a volunteer to St. Vincent de Paul, a charity-based organization, that helps the needy financially and gives them direction toward diverse organizations (govermental and others) that can assist them. I would like to know if Growing Power could be contacted to unite forces with St. Vincent de Paul. Please contact me if so.....770-378-3420. Thank you so much! Sandy Remillard Cumming, GA.
