Tommy TomatoFresno, Calif.-based 1st Quality Produce is providing packaged fresh-cut produce to local schools featuring a cartoon character, Tommy Tomato.

The processor and Fresno Unified School District are supplying free fruits and vegetables to children in low-income areas through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. In the district, 45 schools qualify.

On its website, 1st Quality Produce encourages other districts to apply for funding under the program by the April 25 deadline. The company plans to expand production for California schools.

The fresh-cut processor has provided thousands of the single-serve packages daily since the school year began, according to a news release. Items have included honeydew chunks; strawberries; yam sticks; and jicama with a lemon wedge.

The Tommy Tomato character proves appealing to children, Mike Kahaian, chief executive officer, said in the release.
