So....someone has decided that the only way to sell mandarins is to give then a name that kids might like..."Clementines" "Cuties" and now "Halos". I wonder if this would work for broccoli? Cauliflower? Brussels Spouts? Come on marketing types...who can make these items fun?

Um... "Clementines" is not some made up cute kid friendly name. Clementines are not Mandarin Oranes While clementines are in the same family as mandarins, clementines do not have seeds and mandarin oranges do. Clementine oranges are also sweeter than mandarin oranges.

R, Cuties and Wonderful Halos are brands of clementines/mandarins that are sold by two different companies. Sun Pacific Co. now has sole ownership of the Cuties brand, which it previously jointly owned with Paramount Citrus. After selling the Cuties brand, Paramount Citrus developed the new Wonderful Halos brand for its easy-peel citrus fruit. Paramount Citrus is owned by Roll Global, which also owns Pom Wonderful and Wonderful Pistachios. Coral Beach, staff writer

I have always loved tangerines at Christams time, but I can assure you I will not be purchasing Halos because of the advertising campaign currently in play. It is NOT appropriate for children to denegrate their parents and behave in such a condescending manner as these commercials depict. NOT A FAN.

I have purchased "CUTIES" for years, but until these OBNOXIOUS commercials with the RUDE brats are off the air I won't even CONSIDER buying a box of Halos....and Paramount advertises the product for parents to purchase for their "little angels?". Children nowadays are so imbued with a sense of entitlement that it is sickening...and now we give them permission to tell the people who BUY the Halos that they can't have any, that they are strictly for kids? Besides the commercials being just plain stupid...really, the guy in the bathtube with rubber duckies...don't insult my intelligence or my sensibilities. I will boycott Halos until their advertising changes...how about an attitude of SHARING instead of bratty greediness? I'm sending an email directly to Paramount Citrus expressing my disgust with their commercials. And I'll be buying my "Cuties" from Sun Pacific.

Amen!! Commercials with bratty, snotty little DEVILS? They send the absolute wrong message to kids. Those commercials are nowhere near being cute OR angelic! It's a pity; I'd love to try the fruit. When the commercials change -- and only then -- I will be first in line. (Time to change your ad agency, "Halos!")

Halos and Cuties are NOT the same thing. Halos have seeds and are harder to peel. I have NEVER come across a Cutie with seeds and have always been able to peel it in one piece. Cuties are also juicier and sweeter than the Halos. So, again, NOT the same thing.

I remember when coca cola changed their red can to half red and half white with a polar bear head at the top as a marketing trend around x mas time. Consumers begin to complain, saying the coke tasted different, tasted like something between the organial and diet coke, their sales went down as changed to pespi. Then coke changed back to the red can and has been there since.

I bought Cuties until they ran out last year and they were delicious. Never found a bad one in any bag I bought. This year I just bought a bag of Haloes (sp?) and am displeased so far because they aren't as ripe as last year's Cuties. Initially I had them in the fridge but took them out yesterday so they'd ripen more quickly and they are almost ready for my two cousins and me to eat. Is there a vagueness to exactly what they are or did the company decide they were Clementines over mandarins ?

On our small farm we grow pesticide-free seedless, easy to peel, sweet, juicy, tangerines. We call our fruit what it is; seedless tangerines, no commercials, not multi-million dollar brand name. Yet, we at a certain times of the year, actually grow and sell the same variety of tangerines as those special, CUTE, ANGELIC names. However, if we call our fruit by their name, then we will be sued for trademark infringement or something. This is how monopolies happen. A pesticide-free, seedless, easy to peel, tree ripe tangerine is not good enough anymore because consumers and kids bought the campaign and this kind of agriculture is in my opinion what is destroying our food system and small farms across the country. We can't compete. I am a tad hesitant to even say this on this page, but it is the truth and we work from a values-based, education based philosophy. If you really want to know your food, then get a growing chart that shows what kind of fruit is ripe during which season. If you are eating plums in the winter, they were not grown in the US. Which is fine, but we should know our food and how it is marketed, the impact it has on small farmers, the economy and how much money goes into keeping consumers confused. Know your farmer, and you will know your food. This I hope is the trend of the future!

Wonderful Halos are not nearly as good as the former Cuties. We purchased 2 bags and had to throw out more than half of each one as they were soft and squishy. What is wrong with thess fruits or their packagaging and delivery to markets?

I bought a 5lb bag of Halos at our local WEGMANS grocery store. They taste wonderful, except I had to throw 9 of them out due to being rotten. Not happy with my buy. I can understand one or two, maybe even three. But NINE???!!! Come on! Will be talking with the store for a refund.

We have been eating Cuties for years. We love them. Easy to peel, sweet and juicy. Never a bad one. Our store switched to Halos, so we tried them. They are hard to peel, have seeds and taste like chemicals. My mom, my daughter and I all took a bite and found the same chemical taste. I also agree with the nasty marketing. The kids are RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. But what do you expect from a company that uses a greedy, anti-American, Army deserter like Psy in their ads. I will never buy them again. I stopped buying their nuts and POM is disgusting. There is nothing wonderful about the Wonderful brand.

I just bought my first box of Halos, and they are neither as easy to peel, nor as sweet as Cuties. I hoped someone else would notice the difference. I don't even know if it is possible to find Cuties here anymore. I came to this board to see what happened to them, because since the Christmas season, all I've seen in our weekly ads are Halos. I didn't think they were the same. I don't like them, and I haven't even seen the ads.

This is a bit old but had to comment. I work in a produce department and customers were going nuts about there not being Halos, and the fact that the box said Clementines. As a trained botanist I actually know they are the same exact thing, but customers complained and told me I was wrong and even got angry - but they were wrong. This just tops it off though - Halos are actually the same people, the same farms and trees that were Cuties, just a different name now? I wish I could show this to all the insane people that got mad about it and were wrong and then some...

I have had the Cuties before and LOVED LOVED LOVED them. Super sweet and juicy and no strings with a little bit of a bite to them. I cannot find them anymore. So, I decided to try the Halos. They are tough and stringy and do not taste nearly as good as the Cuties. I want my Cuties back. Whatever they did, it wasn't just a matter of changing the name...it's like a totally different fruit. UGH!!!

Why replace such a good name. Love the name Cutie much more then Halo. The taste of cutie was better. I am not sure if the Halo is from the same tree. It seems like they not as sweet as before n their taste r not consistent.

Sounds to me like there is a handling difference between Cuties and Halos right at the orchard. Perhaps even a difference in initial cull, too. Even if the trees are identical differences in handling and cultivation can produce noticeable differences in the final product. As many bad fruits as are noted here also strongly suggests that there is increased spoilage right on the supermarket, which should be noted in supermarket waste reports. If so that will influence market share all by itself as much as customer preference in both sales and comments to store staff will. I will stick with Cuties myself. I like em and also prefer them to imported for taste and would like to buy product of USA as much as possible.

I like your oranges but I realy do not like your commercials. Here you have a mom or dad, the ones who lovingly bought the oranges for their children, and a nasty attitude child scolding the parents for eating their oranges. Sheesh, what happened to our sweet grateful children.....has this not been taught why cant you teach that in your add instead of being nasty and ungrateful. I turn the sound off for your commmercials so I dont have to hear the nasty little children...

I love the Halos and so do my Grandchildren, but your advertising Dept. has dropped the ball…I love to see children "empowered", but not to the extent that they're threatening the very adults who buy the oranges..If my Grandchild told me that I'd have to sleep in a tiny bed, wearing a super hero costume; I'd tell him to go to time-out and he'd better never talk to an adult like that again! I'd also remind him of who buys the food!!

I love clementine tangerines and saw a box the other day in the store but I agree with some of the others here and probably a good percentage of consumers. I steered clear of them due to their branding. It was not clear if it was Resnick's wife.... not sure....WHO on that creative team decided to brand their product using BRATs as their little spokes peeps??!!! In this day and age... of thinking it's cute when a toddler starts saying NO! I won't support a script showcasing kids sassing their parents. Period. And my adult kid is a working and successful actor and I am a writer. I GET that they are actors. THAT is what I think disturbs most of us. The writer could have written sooo many other scenarios selling Halos without causing us to want to boycott them. Even if "we" are the minority here (which I don't think we are) why wouldn't you want to write a campaign that wins everyone over?

The Halos commercials I have seen just contribute to the notion that children should be entitled little brats who can tell parents they are not allowed to have a Halo while sitting at the kid's game.....to which they probably carted the kid along with a bunch of friends. And I wonder who bought the Halos? I know....it's only a commercial. However, anything that contributes to disempowerment of parents is a big mistake. It's enough to make me shop where they sell Cuties or some other brand. This ad campaign is not cute, and neither are those children! Thanks!

NOT only that.. we bought some "Halos" and they seemed like they experienced a frozen period. By the time we got them they were tasteless and dry.... Finally tossed the whole lot of them... !!!!

After watching dozens of your parent/child Halos commercials I am disgusted. Why would you promote a sassy, back talking and rude children? It is sooo againt the respect that this world really needs. I do not see it as cute when a parent works hard to bring home nutritious food for the entire family and a child dictates who can enjoy the fruit of the parents labor. I will never buy another box of them for my family or classroom till you clean up your ads.

In a world fraught with disrespect from adult to adult, adult to child, child to child and company to company, I do not see the need to perpetuate the disorderly conduct associated with a fresh, good for you fruit. I mean Kraft mac and cheese did it in a way that was cute but your ads are just mean and rude. Even the kid looks like a wanna be hoodlum. I don't eat your fruit as it is too expensive for my family due to the lack of being able to eat them all before they spoil, but that does not mean I don't formulate opinions based on the advertising for future purchases as well as the rest of the world. Please rethink your campaign to enhance the fresh, PURE goodness your product wants to be known for. Thank you.

Cuties and Halos are identical as far as last season everything was labeled under the Cuties brand, and this year it's split between the two. There was a freeze in California in early December that has probably affected the flavor of all citrus fruit, not just the Halos. That being said, the commercials for the Halos are quite terrible. They don't make me want to laugh, they make me upset that a child can act like that and the parent is ok with it.

Kudos to everyone who is standing up and talking about the negligent marketing for this product. There is no malice on my end, just the concern of an adult who has already witnessed, ten fold, the morally retarded marketing ideas , for products ranging from candy cigarettes to awful misogenistic and violent rap (music?)...which is INTENTIALLY MARKETED toward impressionabke youngsters. I hope you are all familiar with the old song 'What the world needs now', Is the ONLY reason these think tank goons are pushing this reckless message to children, the fact that they foresee it making their pockets fatter? Thank goodness I am not the only one who HATES this ridiculous commercial. Not a good example to set for other kids to see them being so greedy and not sharing with the parents who bought them the Halos in the first place. If my child had done that, I would have taken the Halos away and given them to a needy family that would have appreciated them.

In January when I could not find the "Cuties" that we loved last year, I finally purchased a box of "Halos", well they looked close enough, almost. Not as pretty. But the taste was just NOT THE SAME! as 2013 Cuties. Not as sweet and did not last as long on the kitchen counter or in the refrigerator. They actually started turning brown in 2 weeks, whereas I kept Cuties up to 4 weeks last year. My Grandchildren were not pleased with the taste, neither was I. Perhaps growing conditions were different this year, perhaps shipping and storage played a part in the lower standard of fruit but I won't be buying any more Halos this year. I keep looking for Cuties, hoping they will be better than the Halos on the market this winter-spring. All 3 generations of my family agree that we miss the Cuties of 2013. WOW, spending millions in marketing..... growing & selling oranges must be a very profitable produce.... or the producer/farmers are taking a hit.

Just purchased a bag of Halos after the 3 lb bag of Cuties were gone. The Halos actually had better flavor and sweetness than the Cuties I got last week. I really think that the sweetness of the fruit is dependant on the crop, time of harvest etc. Even before Halos were launched, I occasionally got a box of bad Cuties. This is just a part of purchasing fresh produce. Sometimes they are good, sometimes not so good.

Roll Intl. is good at leveraging grocery stores to sell their product. They do it with pomegranates and pistachios. Try and find a pomegranate that's not a Pom Wonderful during pomegranate season. I heard they said "if you want to sell our Pom juice then we need exclusivity on the Pom fruit". They understand that marketshare is more important than branding. I believe that is why they gave up the Cutie label. They will just leverage the "Cuties" out of the marker place.

Halos are definitely superior to other brands of citrus in reliability, ease of peeling, and sweetness. The commercial did the trick, since it stuck with you, for good or bad. I buy a bag a week- just for me!

The current commercial is indicative of how the schools, parents and society are embolding children with a sense of selfishness and rude disrespectful behavior! I will not only not purchase this product but will also not purchase any product this company is involved with until these current ad campaign is discontinued. We speak loudest with our dollars and encourage others to boycot this company.

I ate my last piece of fruit when I saw the ad with the kid pointing a red laser at his father's head. I threw the rest of them out when I saw the ad with the horse head in the father's bed How does violence make a person want to eat fruit?

I think the ads are funny. The cat one especially. Lighten up folks, it is better than a lot of other commercials out there. Besides, if you are talking about it, or searching it on the web, the campaign is successful.

Nice commercial. I can't believe these haven't been pulled for their shameless disrespect for parents and damn near violent message. It's hard enough to teach children how to behave and ask nicely for things they want and you show them that they can just go ahead and get the cat to scratch their dad's face off before demanding more of what they want. Its a terrible message and I will never buy clementines, cuties, halos or whatever you call them next. Shame on you!!!!

they are NOT the same. clementine cuties were bigger and much much easier to peel. i noticed last year the they looked the same but the skin on halos was much thinner and very difficult to peel for such a small fruit. i dislike the mandarins very much and am really upset at this change. i looked forward every winter to the small bright fruits.

They may say they are the same fruit, but Halos are not as good as Cuties..Our stores only carry the Halos and people are complaining all the time..Cuties had a sweeter, fresher taste.

I will not purchase Halos, even though I enjoy Mandarin oranges. The add campaign presents a skewed and degraded picture of family life. Certainly, as some have commented here, it's harmful for kids to watch. And I think that it's also harmful for parents. Parents need support and encouragement to lead and guide their families in positive ways. The commercials depict small children bullying and terrorizing other family members: Baby brother duct taped to the wall; Dad held at bay with a laser pointer!!! It's not funny, especially considering the disturbing level of violence and lack of empathy that we so often witness in our communities.

My complaint is with the producer's of Halo oranges commercial which depicts child abuse. Duct taping a child to a door is illegal and may give parents the idea its okay to duct tape a child to keep them where you want them. There was a recent case on the new here. The parents duct tape a child to the wall the parents were arrest for child abuse and wreckless endangerment. How anyone could think depicting this for the sale of food to children is okay must have a screw loose. If I was a lawyer that would be my defense for my client. They saw it on a TV commercial and they thought it was okay. Then sue the company for making people think its okay. It's sad that any advertising firm thinks this is a good idea.

I find that they need to really look at the commercials for these cause to me they make the kids look like they have control over the family and parents. Using the cat, or the head of a stuffed horse is too much and it makes the kids look like since they threatened the parents that's how they will gets things and that is not right. This society has made kids feel like they are in control and the parents have no say and that should not be. Kids need to learn the word NO. We don't buy halos because of the commercials . I am stating my opinion and that's how I feel.

I started out eating cuties, but one time they were out and only had halos in the store. I thought that they were way better, and have been addicted ever since and go through a whole bag in one day. I guess I'm going crazy since they are the same thing by the same distribution company. That's if I read this blog correctly.

I am commenting on the commercial that has the red laser pointing at the dad. Has anyone in marketing thought about all the wrong messages this sends to kids, since you are selling to them indirectly? What message are you trying to convey here exactly? It seems like the company is advocating bullying or intimidation techniques with this ad, I don't like the message at all! With all the violence and misguided kids & people around, it seems that a company promoting oranges/ mandarins/ etc. could find another way. It makes me NOT want to buy from your company. If anyone else is paying attention at all they wouldn't either, unless of course they think that violence & kids go together. Does this commercial air in Sandy Hook Massachusetts? Feel free to contact me, I just feel that as a society we are becoming too desensitized & this commercial proves it. I could go on but won't , I hope someone pays attention to this. Page

As a Grandmother, I refuse to purchase this product because commercials are purely offensive. Some of my Grandkids are even offended! The headless pony was simply disgusting! What the heck are you thinking-promoting this violence and meanness? My four year old. had a nightmare about being taped up and left alone. Completely offensive tv ads. No business from my family of 34.

Last year my husband I loved eating the Cuties.....they were sweet and melted in your mouth. On two separate occasions have purchased Halos from Walmart.....however have been disappointed. The fruit is not juicy and is dry tasting. Lots of puffy/white strings stuff inside peels. Bring back the Cuties. Maybe this is a bad year for the Halos.

I logged on here expressly to see if any comments had been made about the ridiculous Halos commercial showing an infant duct taped to the wall. I realize this is not a website of the Roll company or the Halos brand, but I'm hoping someone from their marketing department or even an executive of the company like Rob Six or Lynda Resnick will see all these comments and realize just how offensive their advertising campaign is to many many people. Or maybe an editor at The Packer can do them a favor and call their attention to all these posts. It's evidently a small world in the citrus packing business. Much has been said about their appetite for promoting disrespect. And it's not unusual for a company to create buzz with controversy. But how can Ms. Resnick or Mr. Six condone (and promote and inspire) child endangerment, and think that's funny? Theyve crossed the line. Here is a shout- out to future trial lawyers who may run across this post while doing research for a personal injury or accidental death claim involving infants and duct-tape. I agree with all of the comments about the obnoxious children while I like the cuties, I think I will not buy them again until they take the horrid horrid commercials off. Who in their right mind would think up a commercial where a little girl puts a half dead horses head in her dad's bed making the godfather.? This is unbelievable. And then he like a frightened full goes to the store to buy her her favorite cuties. What in the world is happening with advertising???

When a parent/caregiver duct tapes, or otherwise restrains a child to a door or wall, they go on trial for child abuse. How is it merely considered advertising when a big company does the same thing? Scary.

Dear HappyHalos, I do not watch TV very often because I work 6 days a week. I still have managed to see three of these aforementioned commercials. You had better see a few before you sanction the decision of this company to make it acceptable for children to become little demons who terrorize their parents and siblings over their desire to have a "Halo". Before seeing those commercials I bought a bag of Halos, which upon opening, presented me with a handful of moldy squishy mandarin which grossed me out so much that I threw away the entire bag. I will not be buying them again for all the reasons given above.
