The new products mark the grower-shippers’ first foray into value added and are an extension of its “Better with Reds” campaign, said Leah Brakke, marketing manager.
“Based on what we’ve been hearing from customers, potatoes get kind of boring, so we’ve been looking around at how we can spice up potatoes and make them easy,” she said.
McCormick, Sparks, Md., also was looking to expand its Produce Partners seasoning line, so the partnership benefited both parties, Brakke said.
Black Gold Farms also offers retailers a high-graphic free-standing secondary display with three tiers — one for each flavor.
In addition, the promotion features in-store point-of-sale materials, social media and a micro website, www.betterwithreds.com, that provides consumer-specific flavor and nutritional information.
The new products feature 24 ounces of fresh red potatoes packed in a specially developed handled clamshell along with a packet of one of McCormick Produce Partners’ seasoning flavors — roasted Italian herb, roasted onion and garlic, or roasted garlic and rosemary.
The containers are designed to maintain potato quality without refrigeration and can be displayed alongside regular potatoes in the produce department or elsewhere in the store in a secondary display, she said.
Consumers simply rinse and cube the potatoes, toss them with oil and the contents of the spice packet, and bake.
Having ingredients together in one package helps simplify meal preparation and eliminates the need to measure or hunt for other spices, Brakke said.
