Loblaw thinks inside the “Box” for new format

Brampton, Ontario-based Loblaw Cos. Ltd. opened a new small format store focused on deep discount and value shoppers. The 10,000-square-foot store, Box by No Frills, leverages the company’s discount, but at less than half the size.

The first store opened in Calgary, said Sarah Davis, chief financial officer, during a June 19 conference call.

The company decided to try the new format as a possible fill-in store, Davis said. If the format is successful, Loblaw plans to buy new property to expand the concept.

The company declined to elaborate on the new format, deferring discussion to its 2nd quarter financial results call, planned for late June.
