Effective Oct. 1, The Fresh Grocer, Philadelphia, will be part of Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp.

Seven of eight stores will remain under The Fresh Grocer, with one converting to the ShopRite banner, according to a new release. Patrick Burns also continues as owner and operator of the chain.

“Adding the strength of The Fresh Grocer brand and its unique offering will help us continue our growth in the Philadelphia marketplace,” said Joe Sheridan, Wakefern president and chief operating officer, in a news release. “With several stores strategically located near college campuses, The Fresh Grocer will give us new insight into the next generation of consumers and will expand our reach to a new customer, while providing them with a wide offering of ShopRite branded products.”

Wakefern’s cooperative now includes 50 retail owners with more than 300 stores under the ShopRite and PriceRite banners in the Northeast U.S., along with retail distribution business in the Northeast and Bermuda.
