Sunkist Growers -- which along with its sister cooperative, Fruit Growers Supply Co., had for years called Sherman Oaks home -- will be moving to Valencia.

In August, the 120-year-old cooperative acquired an office building in the Santa Clarita Valley, much closer to major citrus production areas, according to a Sept. 11 article in the Santa Clarita Signal.

The cooperative had been searching for a new location for at least 2 1/2 years.

The co-op’s former headquarters building off of Highway 101, along with the 8.5 acres on which it sits, was sold to Sherman Oaks-based private equity firm, IMT Capital, in February, according to a March 30 Los Angeles Daily News article. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

IMT Capital plans to incorporate the building into a much larger mixed-use redevelopment project, according to the article.

Sunkist built the striking three-story building in 1971.

No move date has been scheduled, Joan Wickham, mananager of advertising and public relations, wrote in an email.

In the meantime, the co-op will configure and build out the interior space of the 100,000-square-foot building oin Valencia. As part of the sales agreement on the Sherman Oaks property, Sunkist leased its current space for 30 months to allow time for renovation.

Sunkist decided to make the move after reassessing office space needs and as part of efforts to focus attention and resources on its core business of marketing our growers’ fruit, Wickham said.

Sad to hear that the move is happening, I worked for Sunkist from 1971 to 1978 at the International Headquarters in Sherman Oaks and we literally filled the building. It was a wonderful time and everyone was like family, or was family, as I had a Aunt who also worked there. In fact she was Roy Utkes (pres. at the time) admin. asst. In my entire lifetime, I have never had any job I enjoyed as much!!! Oh, the stories I could tell.
