New York-based BrightFarms Inc. plans to finance, build and run a hydroponic greenhouse in Chicago to supply Mariano’s, a banner of Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc., according to a BrightFarms news release.
“We have made a strong commitment to using locally grown produce from farmers across the three states in which Roundy’s operates,” Donald Fitzgerald, Roundy’s group vice president and chief merchandising officer, said in the release. “We are pleased to enter into this partnership with BrightFarms as we continue to expand our offerings of ‘locally grown.’”
BrightFarms, some of whose greenhouses are built on the roofs of grocery stores, is evaluating sites in Chicago.
“We look forward to our partnership with Mariano’s,” BrightFarms’ chief executive officer, Paul Lightfoot, said in the release. “The Mariano’s experience is unique, and we’re honored that we will be able to contribute to their already extraordinary selection of produce offerings.”
