The order, issued in 1980, established the 12-member California Desert Grape Administration Committee. It has not been amended since its inception. Earlier this year the committee increased the assessment from 1 cent to 1.25 cents per 18-pound lug of grapes handled.
The order covers about 50 growers, 14 handlers and 100 importers. Regulations of the order are applied to all entities, regardless of size. It authorizes quality control with mandatory outgoing inspection, specifies container and pack requirements, packing holidays, production research, market research and development and reporting requirements.
The AMS review of the order was to assure that the order and the regulations fit the needs of the industry and are consistent with federal law.
