The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc. has a new chief executive. Paul Hertz, who has been chief operating officer since 2010, is now at the helm of the 155-year-old retail chain.
Hertz succeeds Sam Martin, who had been president and chief executive officer of the Montvale, N.J.-based retailer since July 2010. Greg Mays remains as chairman of the board for the 301-store chain.
A&P also has a new chief administrative officer, Christopher McGarry, and a new chief strategy officer, Nirup Krishnamurthy, according to a March 21 news release. McGarry had been executive vice president of A&P. Krishnamurthy was previously chief information officer for the company.
Hertz has 27 years of experience in the retail industry. Before joining the A&P executive staff, Hertz was executive vice president of retail stores for OfficeMax.
He began his retail career in 1987 as a manager with Fred Meyer Inc., a division of the Kroger Co. He also worked in executive positions for Wild Oats Markets and Shopko Stores, according to the news release.
