Economist Roberta Cook is the scheduled keynote speaker for Ag Against Hunger’s Agricultural Woman of the Year award luncheon and fundraiser June 7 in Soledad, Calif.
The event will be at Paraiso Vineyards. The honor is given annually to women who have supported agriculture and served as agents of change and industry leaders, according to a news release.
Cook is cooperative extension marketing economist at the University of California-Davis, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
It’s the 20th annual event. Last year’s winner was Mari Rossi, co-owner of Hollister-based apricot grower-shipper B & R Farms LLC. Other recent winners included Abby Taylor-Silva; Karen Antle; Darlene Din; Celeste Settrini; Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin and Lorri Koster.
It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Salinas, Calif.-based nonprofit. In 2012 Ag Against Hunger raised $42,630 at the luncheon, which includes auctions. It starts at 11:30 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online. More information is available at 831-755-1480.
KSBW news anchor Michelle Imperato is the scheduled emcee.
Almost 14 million pounds of fresh produce was donated last year through Ag Against Hunger to food banks in California and the West Coast.
