The company reported a 1.7% decrease in sales for the quarter and 1.8% decrease in same store sales.
“In a challenging competitive environment, we remain focused on executing our Reshaping Retail strategy and continue to make investments in our customer and value offering, making our stores a better place to shop,” said chief executive officer Dick Boer said, in the company’s quarterly report presentation.
Ahold USA plans to complete store refreshes, its Reshaping Retail program, in a total of 320 stores by the end of the year, Boer said.
“The accelerated roll out of the program together with our decision to absorb commodity price increases resulted in an investment in margin that was partly offset by cost savings from our Simplicity program,” he said, in the presentation.
Ahold’s Reshaping Retail program is centered on six areas:
- Increasing customer loyalty;
- Broadening product offering, including more focus on private label and online shopping;
- Expanding geographical reach;
- Responsible retailing;
- People performance.
