Stop & Shop Supermarkets and its parent company, Ahold, plan to contribute half a million dollars to help victims of the Boston bombing.

Ahold, Stop & Shop pledge Boston bombing aidPart of Netherlands-based Ahold NV’s Ahold USA Inc., the Quincy, Mass.-based chain is pledging to donate $500,000 to The One Fund Boston, an organization that assists victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Stop & Shop and Ahold plan to contribute to The One Fund through Ahold’s Our Family Foundation charitable organization.

The One Fund,, was set up by Gov. Deval Patrick (D-Mass.) and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino shortly after the April 15 bombing killed three and injured more than 140 people.

Ahold, Stop & Shop pledge Boston bombing aid“Words cannot express the tragedy that took place at the Boston Marathon,” Joe Kelley, president of Stop & Shop’s New England division, said in a news release. “We mourn with all of those who were affected. Our thoughts and prayers are with the city of Boston and our local and global communities as the details of this tragic event continue to unfold.”

Stop & Shop remains here for its associates, its communities and plans to support local, state and federal responders working around the clock, Kelley said in the release.

“We’re proud to see the spirit of people coming together in support of the victims and for the great city of Boston,” he said in the release. “We’re glad to support The One Fund Boston to help families and the city recover.”
