The AmazonFresh online grocery from Amazon Inc. expanded to the Los Angeles market in early June and plans to open in San Francisco later in the year.

Launched in Amazon’s hometown of Seattle about six years ago, the service offers a wide range of groceries, from produce and meat to boxed dry goods, delivered to consumers in insulated containers.

According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, the service charges $8 to $10 for most deliveries, with orders over $100 delivered free. AmazonFresh also offers a frequent buyer program called the Big Radish.

According to the website,, there are 456 stock-keeping units for produce, including:

  • Large fuji apples, $1.19 each
  • A .75-ounce clamshell of herbs, $2.69;
  • 1.5-pound bags of organic fingerling potatoes, $6.99;
  • Fresh Express 50/50 mix bagged salad (5.5-ounces), $2.99;
  • An 18-ounce clamshell of blueberries, $12.99;
  • Crunch Pak Foodles, $3.49 each;
  • Unripe avocados, $2.79 each.

Google Inc. also recently started a pilot program for grocery delivery in the San Francisco Bay area. Google Shopping Express reportedly offers same-day delivery from participating brick-and-mortar retailers through one site.
