(UPDATED COVERAGE, Sept. 17) Southeast Produce Council president Andrew Scott has joined Superior Sales Inc., as its first vice president of sales and marketing.

Andrew ScottScottScott began working for the Hudsonville, Mich.-based shipper, distributor and repacker on Sept. 16.

The longtime sales and procurement manager for Atlanta wholesaler General Produce Inc., Scott left his position in June to take the summer to spend more time with his family and look into other produce industry opportunities.

He said he wanted to find a position that would allow him to work from his home and travel.

“I wanted to learn the grower-shipper side of the business,” Scott said. “This gives me a great opportunity to do that, literally getting to the ground level with produce. Superior is a great company that’s been around a long time. I want to help them grow as they add growers and become a year-round player in Eastern vegetables and build that Superior brand.”

Scott cited Superior’s August addition of J&R Baker Farms in Norman Park, Ga.

He said he plans to spend a couple of days a week at such operations during the season.

Randy Vande Guchte, Superior’s president, said Scott will help unify Superior’s national offices as he works to land new accounts.

“Andrew brings a wealth of knowledge of and from the business,” Vande Guchte said. “He’s high energy and brings a different perspective from what we’re used to.”

Superior SalesBefore joining General Produce in 2006, where he managed sales and buying, Scott spent 15 years working various positions including produce manager and in logistics and sales account management for Eden Prairie, Minn.-based C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc.’s Atlanta operation.

A West Palm Beach, Fla., native, Scott remains active in the East Ellijay, Ga.-based Southeast Produce Council.

An early council member, Scott joined the group in 2001 and has worked on committees and served as the group’s treasurer, secretary, vice president and president. His term runs through September 2014.

Superior also markets produce from offices in San Antonio; Salinas, Calif.; Kingsburg, Calif.; Walla Walla, Wash.; and Ann Arbor, Mich.
