In 1990, Apio sent a truckload of broccoli to the White House to protest President George H.W. Bush’s dislike of the vegetable, banning it from Air Force One.
Reports of the president’s comment during an unscheduled appearance at the July 9 event were welcomed at Guadalupe, Calif.-based Apio, whose Eat Smart label includes products featuring the vegetable.
“Broccoli is one of the original superfoods,” Ron Midyett, Apio chief executive officer, said in a news release, referring to foods with phytonutrients.
At the White House children’s event, Obama also said preparation of vegetables shapes perceptions of taste, according to news accounts. Apio’s recent recipes have included brocolli pizza and broccoli with fusilli pasta and red peppers.
