The Washington Apple Education Foundation donated $5,000 each to scholarship funds at the University of Washington and Washington State University.
The annual donation given before the two schools’ Apple Cup football game, titled the Apple Cup Scholarship, was presented at a pre-game reception at Century Link Field in Seattle, according to a foundation news release.
WAEF scholarship contributions are awarded by each university to recipients demonstrating scholastic success and overall merit.
Foundation executive director Jennifer Witherbee made the Apple Cup Scholarship presentation, and among attendees at the reception was Gov. Christine Gregoire, according to the release.
The tree fruit industry’s charity has awarded more than $425,000 in scholarships in 2011, the release said.
The Washington Apple Education Foundation fosters educational opportunities, academic excellence and promotes awareness of Washington’s tree fruit industry.
