Washington Apple Education Foundation honors young artist

Courtesy Washington Apple Education FoundationMariah Elgin's grand prize-winning "Red Delicious.” Mariah Elgin, 13, has been named the Washington Apple Education Foundation Grand Prize winner in the 16th Annual Year of the Apple Art Contest. As the grand prize winner, the Tacoma, Wash., teen received $750 cash for the artwork she submitted titled, “Red Delicious.”

Elgin’s artwork will also be published in the 2012 Dow AgroSciences wall calendar. Currently a freshman in high school, Elgin completed the drawing, which features a sliced red delicious apple in colored pencil, during her 8th-grade year at Meeker Middle School, Tacoma, Wash.

The Year of the Apple selection committee selected seven Washington students, who together received $1,650 in prize money, according to a news release. The contest also sent $100 checks to each winning student’s school to acknowledge their support of the arts.
