About 76 million bushels of fresh-market U.S. apples had yet to be shipped as of Feb. 1, comparable to last year at the same time.

The February total is 8% higher than the five-year average, according to the February Market News report from the Vienna, Va.-based U.S. Apple Association.

Washington accounted for 63.6 million bushels, Michigan for 5.3 million bushels, New York for 4.3 million bushels and Pennsylvania for 1.1 million bushels.

Holdings of red delicious and several other leading varieties were down from last year. Red delicious holdings fell from 27.1 million to 24.9 million bushels, fujis from 12.1 million to 7.8 million bushels, golden delicious from 8.7 million to 7.5 million bushels and Pink Lady from 2.44 million to 2.36 million bushels.

Gala holdings increased from 12 million to 12.3 million bushels and granny smith holdings from 7.8 million to 10 million bushels.

Holdings of mcintosh, empire and other traditional Eastern and Midwestern varieties continued to be well above last year, thanks to strong recoveries in Michigan, New York and other states from devastating 2012 freezes.
