U.S. fresh-market apple holdings totaled 23.6 million bushels on June 1, 5% fewer than last year at the same time.
The June total was 6% higher than the five-year average, according to the June Market News report from the Vienna, Va.-based U.S. Apple Association.
Nearly 22 million bushels of the apples yet to ship were in Washington. New York had 742,000 bushels and Michigan 720,000 bushels.
Holdings of most major varieties were down from June 2013.
Red delicious holdings fell from 12 million to 9.9 million bushels, golden delicious from 3.1 million to 2.8 million bushels, galas from 2.8 million to 2.3 million bushels and fujis from 3.1 million to 2.1 million bushels.
Granny smith holdings increased from 2.9 million to 4.1 million bushels and Pink Ladys from 466,000 to 502,000 bushels.
