About 36.9 million bushels of fresh-market apples, mostly in Washington, had yet to be shipped as of May 1, 21% more than last year at the same time.
The May 1 total also was 21% above the 5-year average, according to the May Market News report from the Vienna, Va.-based U.S. Apple Association.
Washington accounted for 36 million of the 36.9 million bushels still in storage.
Holdings of all major apple varieties were up from May 1, 2012.
Red delicious rose from 13.8 million to 16.2 million bushels, fujis from 2.9 million to 5.1 million bushels, galas from 3.7 million to 5 million bushels, golden delicious from 3.7 million to 4.5 million bushels and granny smiths from 4 million to 4.1 million bushels.
