South Africa’s exports of apples, pears and grapes will decline in 2014, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts.

The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service said that total exports of apples and pears will decline by 16% and 10%, respectively, because of unseasonable hail and rainfall late last year that reduced supply of export quality fruit. South Africa grape exports also will slide 7% in 2014, according to the report.

South Africa’s production of apples, pears and grapes is expected to remain flat in 2014, according to the USDA.

South Africa exports pears to the U.S. from March to August, according to the USDA. In 2013, South Africa exported about $1.7 million in pears to the U.S. South Africa exported only $76,000 in apples and $323,000 in table grapes in 2013.

Europe remains the largest market for South African deciduous fruit, purchasing 38% of the country’s apple exports, 70% of pear exports and 79% of total grape exports, according to the USDA report.
