LutzApple volumes in supermarkets were up and prices down in November, according to a report from Wenatchee, Wash.-based Columbia Marketing International.

Volumes rose 2.5% and retail prices fell 6.5% during the month, according to Nielsen Perishables Group data cited in a CMI news release.

Galas, Honeycrisp and other newer varieties are driving category growth, while volumes of red delicious and other older varieties continue to decline, according to the data.

More galas were stocked in U.S. supermarkets in the four-week period ending Nov. 23 than any other variety. Honeycrisp came in second.

“More consumers are selecting newer variety apples like gala, Honeycrisp and fuji at the expense of some traditional favorites,” Steve Lutz, CMI’s vice president of marketing, said in the release. “This is beginning to impact performance of legacy varieties like red delicious and golden delicious and even established varieties like braeburn.”

Red volumes fell 12% from the year before and goldens by 8% in the four-week period ending Nov. 23.

By percentage, the biggest volume gains in the period were seen in Pink Ladys (up 44%) and Ambrosias (up 22%), Lutz said.
