Arizona group introduces food safety poster

Courtesy Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Committee A dual-language poster outlining 15 safety precautions for field workers has been developed by the Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Committee.

On a one-page color poster — one side in English, the other in Spanish — the 15 rules appear with photo illustrations. For $35, the committee is offering a package that includes laminated posters, an electronic version for reproduction and a food safety kit, according to a news release.

Kits can be ordered by calling 602-542-0945.

The program is designed for harvest supervisors and foremen, safety coordinators, production supervisors, quality control personnel and others conducting food safety training at leafy greens farms.

The food safety program started in 2010 as a response to third-party audit findings that most infractions of safe handling happen at the field level.

“(The poster) is an ideal complement to the more comprehensive food safety training program, allowing field managers to … provide a quick overview for workers that may be new to the environment and until they are able to cover all the modules in the larger program,” Vicki-Lynne Scott, committee board member, said in the release.

“There are often times when impromptu and even scheduled trainings are done in the field, and these tools are ideal to use for … ‘tailgate meetings’ on the back of a truck.”

The program was recognized as one of the five best new food safety solution finalists in the United Fresh 2011 New Product Award competition.
