Nearly five months after it was proclaimed California’s state vegetable, artichokes will be featured at the Monterey County Fair, where this year’s theme is “At the Heart of It All.”
The 77th annual fair runs Aug. 28 to Sept. 2 in Monterey, Calif.
On Aug. 30, Castroville, Calif.-based Ocean Mist Farms is scheduled to host the fairgrounds’ Ag Building. Ocean Mist will serve fried artichokes and enter its product line of fresh vegetables, including artichokes, for judging against other locally grown produce.
Each year at the fair, grower-shippers put together special packs for the vegetable commodity judging competition.
Ocean Mist’s Arti the Artichoke mascot is promoting the fair. He is scheduled to appear in a local television commercial. Details on his fairgrounds appearances will be on his Facebook page.
California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed artichokes the state vegetable — and avocados the state fruit — in April.
