Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland B.V. received second place in the Food Valley Award competition for a centrifuge that processes leafy vegetables.
The Dutch innovation award recognizes the Almelo, Netherlands-based company for its Super Salad Spin Dryer, a continuous centrifuge.
Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland B.V., which also has offices in Salinas, Calif., is marketing the technology as an alternative to batch systems for drying lettuce, spinach and other leafy greens. Such methods require buffering leaves before and after drying and involve loading and unloading.
The centrifuge is placed behind the washing process and in front of the packaging line to enable a continuous process.
Instead of the more common drying speed of 600 rpm, the centrifuge moves at 150 rpm, according to a news release.
Product is moved along by injected air. Air amounts differ depending on which leafy green is being processed.
