A collection of Western Canada’s top chefs, nutritionists, authors, and food leaders have joined the fruit cooperative to participate in Apple Month and act as judges for the Great Apple Month Taste Off, according to a news release from the Kelowna, British Columbia-based BC Tree Fruits.
The contest highlights nine apple inspired recipes that will be judged by the panel of judges for the Taste Off, according to the release.
The judges are:
- Vancouver: Jillian Harris and chef Faizal Kassam of Cibo Trattoria;
- Calgary: author and blogger Julie Van Rosendaal and chef and Pierre Lamielle;
- Edmonton: food educator and writer Valeria Lugonja and writer Jennifer Cockrall-King; and
- Okanagan: executive chef Grant De Montreull of Bonfire Restaurant.
Consumers in Canada are invited to visit applemonth.com starting Feb. 1 to vote on the recipies. Each voter’s name is put in a drawing for a chance to win a trip to Kelowna’s The Cove Lakeside Resort. The designer of the winning recipe wins $1,000 for a charity of their choosing, according to the release.
“Apple Month is an initiative that dates back to the early 1960’s as a way to celebrate and promote locally grown fruit,” Chris Pollock, marketing manager, BC Tree Fruits, said in the release. “We are thrilled to engage such talented food leaders in the 2014 Apple Month campaign which will only strengthen our goals of educating consumers to buy local.”
