Courtesy Baloian FarmsBaloian Farms has introduced an heirloom onion product, Sophia la Rosa.

The Italian, sweet flat red onion will be available in limited supply from about Memorial Day to early July, according to a news release.

The onions will ship in a two-count handled bag and come with a merchandising display. Bulk purchasing will be available for the medium, jumbo and colossal sizes, according to Fresno, Calif.-based Baloian Farms.

“With onion consumption being steadily on the rise … we believe Sophia la Rosa will encourage further consumption of red onions and help increase total sales for the category,” Jeremy Lane, sales manager, said in the release. “We look forward to sharing this premium and exclusive product with our customers.”

The onions are grown in California’s Central Valley near Fresno.

Baloian Farms, which has been best known for its pepper production, is marketing the new sweet onion as having virtually no tear or heat factors.
