Baloian Farms plans to expand its portfolio of local squash through a partnership with a Michigan grower-shipper.
The value-added squash offered by the Fresno, Calif.-based Baloian and the Michigan supplier should help retailers increase their offerings of local grown squash, according to a news release.
Squash sauté kits include yellow and green squash with seasoning packets.
The move to focus on local was a natural response for the company in supplying customers’ needs, Jeremy Lane, Baloian’s sales manager, said in the release.
“It made sense to create this seasonal partnership and provide retailers with another strong selling point to further increase their sales,” he said in the release.
The squash will be grown and packed in Michigan and the grower partnership is important because packing from the Midwest reduces the number of food miles involved in delivering product to retailers, Lane said in the release.
The squash kits are available in parmesan with herbs and roasted red pepper flavors.
Launched last fall, the kits include three pieces of fresh squash and the season packet.
Prep and cook time is about five minutes, which makes the product an easy-to-prepare side dish, according to the release.
