Bayer CropScience expands watermelon business

Bayer CropScienceBayer CropScience has agreed to buy the watermelon and melon seed business of Abbott & Cobb Inc.

The deal is expected to be completed within a few weeks of Bayer CropScience’s June 12 announcement, according to a news release from Monheim, Germany-based Bayer CropScience.

About 30 employees of Feasterville, Pa.-based Abbott & Cobb are expected to join Bayer CropScience, which operates under the Nunhems brand.

The acquisition will help Bayer CropScience strengthen its watermelon business in the U.S., Mexico, Australia and Asia, according to the release.

Abbott & Cobb will keep its sweet corn, pepper, squash and other vegetable business.
