Legislation introduced in the House of Representatives would give food stamp recipients a 30% bonus for fruit and vegetable purchases.
H.R. 4904, introduced in late June, has a working title of “Vegetables Are Really Important Eating Tools for You (VARIETY) Act of 2014” and was introduced by Reps. Matt Cartwright, D-Penn., Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., Tony Cardenas, D-Calif., Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and seven other representatives.
The legislation, which would amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 and provide a financial incentive for food stamp households to purchase certain fruits and vegetables, will be referred to the House Agriculture Committee.
