Blue Diamond Growers opened a 200,000 square-foot almond plant in Turlock, Calif.
With the June 18 opening, Sacramento, Calif.-based Blue Diamond has completed nearly half of a three-phase expansion effort expected to take 10 years to complete.
The first phase will yield 100 jobs with Blue Diamond, plus an estimated 123 indirect local supplier-based jobs, Randall Svedbeck, research manager for the Stanislaus Economic Development and Workforce Alliance, said in a news release.
The plant was designed to help meet growing global demand for value-added almond ingredients.
“Value-added revenues for Blue Diamond’s global ingredients business exploded by 69% between 2009 and 2011, and almonds continue to rank No. 1 as the leading nut in new food products worldwide,” Mark Jansen, Blue Diamond president and chief executive officer, said in the release.
The Turlock plant is on an 88-acre parcel at N. Washington and Fulkerth roads.
