Columbia Marketing International is introducing a line of 2-pound pouches of four pear varieties, starting with bartletts.
CMI is offering the fruit as part of a program dubbed Sweet Gourmet Pear. D’anjou, red and bosc pears will be added over time.
It’s the first time the Wenatchee, Wash.-based grower-shipper has packed pears in a pouch.
“A lot of planning went into designing this into a 2-pound pouch, over a 1- or a 2-pound bag,” Bob Mast, CMI president, said in a news release. “Ultimately we wanted to increase the average weight of each pear transaction.”
Each pouch displays a variety-specific recipe. The aim is to get shoppers to try pears they haven’t eaten before.
Research has shown consumers are often unsure when a pear is ripe to eat, so each pouch will include tips on determining ripeness.
