Columiba Marketing InternationalColumbia Marketing International LLC is a finalist for the 2014 Packaging Impact Award program.

The Wenatchee, Wash.-based CMI received the recognition for single serving cherry packaging, according to a news release.

CMI was one of 56 companies entering 67 products for consideration in the Newark, Del.-based Produce Marketing Association’s contest.

PMA narrowed the entrants to 20 packaging submissions as finalists.

CMI introduced Go-Go Fresh-branded sweet cherries during the 2014 season to provide packaging specifically targeting the convenience store segment, Steve Lutz, CMI’s vice president of marketing, said in the release.

To appeal to a wide range of shoppers, the package’s graphics display “retro graphics.”

Produce Marketing AssociationBesides being one of the first single-serving cherry bags, the packaging also features messages for convenience store shoppers.

CMI’s research showed the displaying of nutritional information and fiber content are important purchasing factors for convenience store shoppers, according to the release.

“More and more consumers are shopping convenience stores looking for fresh fruit options,” Lutz said in the release. “The conventional grocery store 2-pound cherry bags are far too large for convenience stores so fresh cherries were rarely seen in this channel despite the fact that cherries are a high demand and high impulse product. The new … single serve bag really opened the convenience store channel for the first time.”

On Oct. 17, PMA plans to announce the awards at its trade show in Anaheim, Calif.
