Courtesy California GiantCalifornia Giant expects to ship a record number of California-grown blueberries this year.

The California deal should kick off for the company by the end of March, according to a news release from Watsonville, Calif.-based Cal Giant.

“Our California coast should ramp up the last week of March with a peak in mid-April, followed by the Central Valley through June,” Evan Pence, the company’s North American operations manager, said in the release.

Overlapping the Central Valley deal for Cal Giant will be a Georgia deal, Pence said. Blueberry production in the Peach State should begin in late April and go through late June.

Cal Giant has been building its blueberry program every year for the past several years, and this year the company expects a 40% volume increase over 2013, Pence said.

Cal Giant also sources North American blueberries from Oregon and British Columbia.

In anticipation of its domestic deals, Cal Giant planned to introduce its new fresh blueberry recipe e-booklet in early March.

The booklet features recipes developed by consumers who entered Cal Giant’s recent blueberry recipe contest, a partnership with Concord Foods.
