The event, May 17, was founded in 1959 by John Moncovich, whose son Bill Moncovich is chief executive officer and partner in California Giant Berry Farms. California Giant staff and organizing committee members draw produce industry support for the cause.
In 2008 the American Cancer Society recognized Bill Moncovich and the committee for hosting its oldest consecutively held fundraiser in the U.S. By that point it had raised more than $1 million.
The bulk of the funds are donated annually to the local chapter of the society. Some also goes to Jacob’s Heart Foundation, which supports families of children with cancer. Sponsorship information is online.
