California Giant Berry Farms plans to donate $10,000 in October to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

A pink ribbon will appear on California Giant strawberry clamshells throughout the month in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention, according to a news release.

The back of the package will direct consumers to a website, www.CalGiantCares.com, for more information. Personal stories from cancer patients, nutrition information and suggested ways to support the cause will be available.

Another website, www.calgiant.com/win, offers similar information. It encourages consumers to “Think Pink!”

Watsonville, Calif.-based California Giant chose the National Breast Cancer Foundation based on its mission of providing mammograms and early detection for those in need, Cindy Jewell, director of marketing, said in the release. The company promotes fresh produce and berries as part of a diet and prevention program against some cancers and heart disease.

California Giant has been a supporter of various charitable organizations, including the American Cancer Society; Children’s Hospice; Jacob’s Heart Foundation, which benefit’s children’s cancer patients; and the Santa Cruz Cancer Foundation, which funds University of California research.

“We want our customers and consumers to know that purchasing our berries makes a difference in their health and in the community,” Jewell said.
