As part of its effort to grow the market in Canada for field-grown tomatoes, California Tomato Farmers shipped boxes of the product to Canadian bloggers.

“Canada is our largest export market, with California exporting about 53,000 metric tons of tomatoes per year,” Chris Zanobini, president of Sacramento-based California Tomato Farmers, said in a news release. “We’d like to see that number continue to increase.”

Canada is home to major greenhouse tomato producers.

Five bloggers were asked to review the California product and create a recipe using the tomatoes. One such recipe was for a candied tomato and bacon pizza. Blog themes ranged from Greek food to child-friendly meals and healthy eating.

The blog posts can be viewed online. Additional comments appeared on social media.

CTF estimates its blogger program has reached 4.4 million Canadian consumers.

The organization cited research done in 2012 by Leger Marketing which found a majority of Canadian shoppers prefer field-grown tomatoes, with 43% willing to pay more for them.
