The Campaign to End Obesity has recognized National Restaurant Association’s president and chief executive officer Dawn Sweeney for her work in helping with the foodservice industry’s nutrition initiatives.

SweeneySweeney received the award during an awards gala on Dec. 6 at the Discovery Channel Worldwide headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., according to a news release.

Under Sweeney’s leadership, the association launched the Kids LiveWell initiative in 2011. Restaurants who participate with Kids LiveWell offer and promote healthful meals for children and focus on increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables, according to the release.

“Dawn has been an enthusiastic and engaged leader in the fight to reverse America’s obesity epidemic,” Stephanie Silverman, a founding director and senior advisor to the Campaign to End Obesity said in the release. “We applaud Dawn’s work encouraging and supporting restaurants’ innovative efforts to provide nutritious options for their customers.”

Sweeney is also a charter member of child Obesity 180, a multi-sector initiative of private, public, nonprofit and academic leaders who have made a commitment to assuring a leadership role in preventing childhood obesity, according to the release.

She also serves on the board of Save the Children.
