A Canadian food safety certification program has a new owner.

CanAgPlus, a new Canadian not-for-profit corporation, will take over operations of CanadaGAP, according to an organization news release.

CanadaGAP, Canada’s national food safety program for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, had been run by its founding organization, the Canadian Horticultural Council.

More than 2,000 fresh produce suppliers are enrolled in certification programs with CanadaGAP, which was founded in 2008.

CanadaGAP has published two manuals to help growers, shippers and packers implement good agricultural practices. The program was recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) for some certification options in May 2010.

Under CanAgPlus’s ownership, CanadaGAP program requirements and its audit and certification process will remain the same for program participants and for certification bodies delivering third-party audits.
