A recall by Safeway and Buy-Low of fresh-cut Caesar salads in Canada is related to potentially contaminated cheese, not fresh produce, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

“The recalled salads are the result of a secondary product identification prompted by the Castle brand shredded cheese recall of Feb. 24,” said Rachael Burdman, media relations staff or the agency. “Through this food safety investigation it was determined that prior to being recalled, some of this cheese was used in stores to create ready-to-eat salads.”

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the salads, which are packaged under the brands Signature Café, Fresh ’n Delicious and Nester’s Own. Best before dates on the products are March 1 and Feb. 28.

The two retailers recalled the salads because of possible listeria contamination, according to the Feb. 25 recall notice on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s website. The notice does not refer to the cheese recall or provide any details regarding what ingredients in the salads is suspect. The quantity of recalled packaged salads is not included in notice.

The salads were available in Buy-Low and Nesters Market in Alberta and British Columbia. Safeway and St. Martin’s Family Foods offered the salads in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

“This recall was triggered by the company,” according to the recall notice. “The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.”

The recalled salads have a variety of universal product codes and are in several different sized packages. Details are included in the recall notice.
