Chefs put Vidalia onion recipes on line for Golden Onion

Golden Onion trophyCourtesy Vidalia Convention & Visitors BureauFor the third year, Georgia chefs are scheduled to compete for the Golden Onion at the Vidalia Onion Festival.Eleven Georgia chefs are set to compete for the third-annual Golden Onion award during the Vidalia Onion Festival, with two of them coming back for their third consecutive attempts.

The chefs will each have an hour to prepare and present an original recipe using Vidalia onions. A panel of judges will determine who takes home the traveling Golden Onion trophy for the year, according to a news release from the Vidalia Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Each chef’s dish will be evaluated on: taste 50%; chef’s verbal presentation 5%; visual presentation 10%; creativity 15%; overall use of Vidalia onions 15%; and adherence to the chef’s recipes submitted during registration.

The winning chef will receive $500 and possession of the trophy until next year’s contest. Second place earns $250 and third place $100, according to the release.

Chef Hilary White was the winner in 2012 and Daniel Chance won in 2013.

The contest is free and open to the public. It is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. April 27 at the Vidalia Community Center.

  •  Brian Justice, chef and owner, Tasteful Temptations Café, Brunswick, Ga.;
  •  Pano I. Karatassos, executive chef, Kyma, Atlanta;
  •  David Larkworthy, executive chef and founder, Five Seasons Brewing Co., Atlanta;
  •  Roberto Leoci, executive chef and owner, Leoci’s Trattoria, Savannah, Ga.;
  •  Danny Mellman, executive chef and owner, Harvest on Main and Blue Ridge Grocery, Blue Ridge, Ga.;
  •  Austin Rocconi, executive chef, Le Vigne Restaurant at Montaluce, Dahlonega, Ga.;
  •  Marc Taft, executive chef and owner, Chicken and the Egg, Marietta, Ga.; and
  •  Jordan Wakefield, executive chef and owner, Smoke Ring, Atlanta.
